Maria Shamai

Last year, Maria joined the inaugural Student Philanthropy Board and threw herself into service. She pitched ideas, helped organize a scavenger hunt and spread the word about the Center for Student Philanthropy.

“I really enjoyed getting to know the other board members and meeting people who are interested in the same things I am,” Maria said. “We had a great first year, but we have the potential to do even more.”

Doing more is a philosophy that has characterized the Owensboro, Kentucky, native’s college career. She serves as the president of the Jewish Student Center, a College of Arts and Sciences ambassador, a peer mentor for the STEM CATS and an ambassador for the Parent and Family Association in addition to preparing for medical school.

“When I look back, I don’t want to say, ‘I got my degree, but what else did I do in college?’” Maria said. “Being at school is a privilege and I want to do small things that bring change and allow me to give back.”
